My third wedding in 3 days saw me drag my tired body out of bed and into my car and up the M6 to the lovely Grange Hotel in Grange Over Sands, on the edge of the Lake District. I’d met Sally & Graeme at the hotel a few weeks before and I was looking forward to their wedding very much as the venue and general location was so stunning. As usual, the day didn’t disappoint.
I started with bridal preparations and also as usual it was a mix of organised and disorganised chaos! I love the energy you get around the bride and her bridesmaids on a wedding, day, it’s a lot of fun for a guy to be around, and although I’m a pretty big fella, I think I manage to stay fairly unobtrusive most of the time, whilst able to help when needed.
My first shots, as so often were to capture some details of the wedding day – jewellery, shoes, the dress and the flowers. After that I’m able to hang back a bit and wait for nice shots to appear as I don’t really need to pose anything at this stage. The shoe shot below was a direct reqest from Sally – I put the shoes on the chaise longue in a variety of ways and this is the one I liked best (my wife likes others better). As for the flowers, they have an elegant simplicity to them which I love!
During the ceremony, both Sally and Graeme got quiet emotional at times and I love the picture I took below, which shows Sally “getting it together” after one such moment – she’s gripping Graeme’s hand and has just had a big gulp of air. It is these moments that I think brides and grooms will always remember – as long as they have the reminder that is, and I’m glad I was able to provide it. I love the first kiss during ceremonies – it is a moment that is always different for a photographer – soem couples kiss for a millisecond, others for what feels like quite a long time. Sally and Graeme’s was quite tricky to photograph as there wasn’t a lot of room for me to get a decent angle. The registrars at this wedding were very proscriptive and had ordered me not to take photographs except of the rings, the kiss and the fake register signing. I managed a few others too, but I was also ordered not to move about, which does limit creativity a little.
Outside, I captured all the family and groom photos that Sally and Graeme had asked for and got some romantic shots too. I love the moment just before a kiss, when a couples’ eyes close and their lips are about to touch…great!
The day ended with a tiny bit of rain dodging before heading inside for the first dance. After that it was home time and rest for tired old me 🙂
My thanks to Nichola, Vikki, Steven, James and Matthew for their help during the day. Good bridesmaids and ushers are priceless!!
Lastly, some nice feedback from the Bride and Groom:
“I’m sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you, we’ve had the most hectic few weeks even after returning from honeymoon, I can’t believe we’ve been married 6 weeks now! Just wanted to pass on our appreciation for the hard work you put in for our wedding on the 31st July, you really did a great job on the day and we had lots of nice comments about your professionalism from our guests!
We’re really happy with the results. They turned out just as relaxed and informal as I’d envisaged and really tell the story of the day well, and all of our friends and family are really pleased with their appearances! Thanks again for all your hard work,Sally and Graeme Dowson”
